Sewing Part 1

Handwork is a grounding activity for children. While observing students in the classroom, we'll often see children enter a focused, quiet flow in their work cycle. In our sewing lessons, we begin with first stringing beads. This is a lesson that we have on our shelves; however, it can easily be recreated at home with string and noodles or any beads. For an added interest, you can color the noodles using acrylic paint or food coloring. Prior to giving the lesson to the child, make sure that the noodles/bead can easily slide onto the string. Sometimes, the children sew the beads for the end purpose of a necklace. While other times, they sew the beads to then take them back off the thread. Happy sewing.
